Hokey Pokey

We practiced our left and right today by doing the Hokey Pokey.  The concepts of left and right are very difficult for kindergartners to understand.  Any practice at home would be helpful.  We use our right hands to put on our heart during the Pledge and to shake hands with a friend.

Blowing Bubbles

We read the poem, "Blowing Bubbles" by Margaret Hillert.  After, we did four stations.  Today, we introduced the dramatic play house area.  We painted with bubbles, drew a picture of ourselves, compared coins, and discussed the concepts of BIG and little with Ms. Ortt.  Make sure you stop by Dairy Queen tonight to view the artwork of our kindergarten classes from 5:00-8:00pm.

Shape Spinner Game

We practiced our shapes today by playing the Shape Spinner Game with a partner.  We took turns spinning the spinner and recording which shape we landed on: rectangle, circle, triangle, square, rhombus, or star.  Whichever tower got to the top first was the winner.  Both classes of kindergartners showed great sportsmanship skills saying "Good Game!" and giving their partners high-fives!

Calendar / Days of School / Weather Watcher

P9240105

Everyday we meet over by our calendar to discuss what day of the week it is.  We sing the Days of the week song, count up to the number and move the arrow on the number line.  Then we flip our chart to show how many days we have been in kindergarten.  Today was day 14.  We tally, add a link, add a straw, flip over the 14 on our hundreds chart and tape up a number line person.  We close our calendar time by graphing the day's weather and temperature.  The morning class is pictured above doing calendar with Ms. Ortt this morning.

Eating Dirt and Worms

One of the highlights of today was celebrating Mrs. Huikko's birthday by eating a special snack: dirt and worms (not the real ones, of course)!  What a perfect rainy day to bring out the real worms outside for comparison.  We took pudding, crumbled an Oreo cookie on top and finished it off with a gummy worm.  Before we ate them (and had chocolate all over our faces) we took pictures with our friends.

Stations - Round 2

Stations went so well last week that we did them again today!  Today's stations were centered around math skills.  We sorted buttons by shapes, size, color, number of holes, and other attributes.  We made AB patterns with colored wooden blocks, pattern blocks, and small farm animals.  Some of our patterns were red block, blue block, red block, blue block and cow, horse, cow, horse.  Another station was a tub of beans with a variety of measurement tools.  How many small scoops did it take to fill up a measuring cup, etc.  Our last station was choice time on the carpet.  I have to compliment how well the students in both classes are at playing together and being good friends!  It makes my heart very happy to see how well they play together.

Shape Art Project

Today we did an art project that used a variety of colored squares.  We changed many of those squares into other shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and circles.  We glued the shapes onto a large sheet of construction paper to make a design or collage.  The kindergartners finished their artwork like any other artist - by signing their name!

First Attempt at Stations

Today was our first attempt to do stations.  In kindergarten, stations is something that we do once or twice a week.  It allows the students to be involved with several different activities (typically four) for about 10-15 minutes each.  Today we painted our alphabet soup using watercolors and watched our crayon letters magically appear through.  We decorated the border of our All About Me page that was completed at orientation.  We used shape stamps to make a shape collage and introduced a new toy for choice time.  The kindergartners did such a great job working hard and their stations and using yellow and green voices (normal talking and whisper voices).  Before doing stations we discussed our volume scale.  As your child if they can remember what some of the colors mean.  A blue (1) voice is super quiet or silent.  A green (2) voice is a whisper voice.  A yellow (3) voice is a normal talking voice.  An orange (4) is an outside voice and a red (5) voice is an emergency only voice.

Tomorrow we hope to finish our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom art projects by scrambling the letters of our names on them, gluing noodles on our alphabet soup, and discussing why we have rules as an introduction to Constitution Day.  Look for our own preamble to come home with our classroom behavior plan!  Have a great weekend, and cross your fingers that WordPress gets fixed at school so we do have to switch our sites!

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

We read the story, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and practiced our shapes.  After doing both, we put them together to make a project of the three bears.  We cut lots of squares into circles by trimming the corners and then glued them onto a rectangle.
